My favourite? Malosol (half-dill) pickles, hands down. Very green and crunchy, kind of a cross between a dill pickle and a cucumber.
I was buying them at the deli, but they're expensive, so I learned to make my own. Very easy.
I also adore pickled wild mushrooms.
I like the pickles that Burger King and McDonald's put on the hamburgers.
Growing up I refused to eat them. Now I would like lots of them on any burger.
I will try a pickle spear when I am 58.
Sonoma Brinery spicy bread and butter pickles. When you first bite into them, they are slightly sweet, but as you chew, they get slightly hot. The best pickle ever! Their Manhattan style kosher dills are great too. What I like about them is that they are the whole, small cucumber and they use no vinegar, just brine. So the pickle stays crunchy and fresh, unlike the mass produced, rubbery, artificially colored imposters masquerading as pickles :-)
I used to love Mt Olive Sweet Sandwich Chips, but they stopped making them. No one really makes a sweet pickle any more. Go to the store and there are 50 kinds of dill and maybe 1 or two sweet if you are lucky, relish and mini cocktail pickles.
.I will say that Wickles (linked above) are really good. They are sweet but also hot, so they are not for everyone.
. I have been playing around with modifications to Alton Browns bread and butter recipe, which is much sweeter than typical bread and butter from the store.
I like any kind of pickle except for bread 'n butter pickles (yecchhh). Dill are the best, the crunchier the better! Big, small, kosher, doesn't matter -- love them all. I will eat the occasional gherkin on a holiday in homage to my childhood, when my mom was forever passing the relish tray 'round the table on special occasions.I also love fried dill pickle chips -- when done right. Breaded, fried spears are just WRONG. The pickle-to-breading ratio is off then. Get thee to The Pengun in Charlotte, NC. The first fried dills I ever tried and still the best I've ever had, with homemade ranch for dipping. Sounds gross but tastes SO good.Still, I love olives even MORE than pickles.
As far as commercially available pickles - Bubbies kosher dills. Not cooked just pickled. Never soggy or limp. Really the best. I think nationally Whole Foods carries them. Otherwise the pickles available in any Polish or Jewish grocery store or deli. I admit it. I'm a pickle snob. No Heinz or Mt. Olive or any thing. Or Vlasic. Other than that my late grandmother's pickles. But that's not possible anymore.
My grandmother's & aunts' pickled watermelon rinds...so crunchy & refreshing on a hot summer day...
