I love shellfish. Abalone, shrimp, and lobster really float my boat.
Mmm! Abalone! In the '70's, abalone was abundant in restaurants near the coast of California. Also easy to find yourself, if you were into scuba diving. Later it became unavailable and I think illegal. (Overfishing--and possibly scuba divers taking them too small.)
I haven't been in CA for a long time (nearly two decades). Is abalone easy to find these days? In restaurants? Fish markets? Is it wild or farmed? Is farmed as good as wild? I miss abalone!
1. Shrimp, especially in the shrimp alfredo (homemade sauce, too!) that I can make, and ofc my famous Green Chile Shrimp Jambalaya. Also quite tasty in shrimp cocktail, breaded, buttered, battered, salsa'd, ceviche'd.
2. Crab legs. Nothing more fun than beating a crab leg with the back of a butter knife and slurping the crab meat out with a little butter, like the leg is a straw or something. Also tasty as a sauce or in soup.
3. Lobster. Never ate it before 3 months ago because lobster looks like giant sea cockroach, but I ate a lobster tail and a pair of claws one time and it was great. Similar to crab, but much sweeter.
3. Salmon- Salmon steak, Japanese grill style, in sushi, sashimi.
4. Tuna- Sushi/Sashimi with soy sauce and a little bit of wasabi, with a side of miso soup.
5. Eel. Yes, eel. Especially in sushi/sashimi when it's served with sweet teriyaki sauce.
6. Cod. Delicious when battered.
7. Cod/Pollock/Whitefish- GREAT IN FISH TACOS
When I lived in Sydney I used to often have Balmain Bugs - are they the same thing? They were goooood! Great fish markets in Sydney
