Last year I spent a lot of time at Oak Island, NC and had the pleasure of being able to purchase incredibly fresh fish of all sorts. Three of my favorites are flounder, trigger fish, and grouper. I bought my fish from Haag and Sons and always got the freshest fish at a fair market price. Clams were great there too. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.
Mmm! Abalone! In the '70's, abalone was abundant in restaurants near the coast of California. Also easy to find yourself, if you were into scuba diving. Later it became unavailable and I think illegal. (Overfishing--and possibly scuba divers taking them too small.)
I haven't been in CA for a long time (nearly two decades). Is abalone easy to find these days? In restaurants? Fish markets? Is it wild or farmed? Is farmed as good as wild? I miss abalone!
My dad dove California in the 70's. Even back then it was illegal to use scuba equipment to harvest abalone. You had to free dive or snorkel.
Lobster...eh, it is okay. I find it funny that something that was once considered peasant food and fed to prisoners (many of whom refused to eat it because they were 'above' such a poor man's food) not too long ago is now considered some kind of luxury.
At least here in Maine, I can buy it for $3 a pound, and anyone outside of New England is getting severely ripped off.
By the way, no one eats a lobster's tail. The tail is the fan on the end comprised of the uropods and telson. What Red Lobster has duped you into believing is the tail is actually the abdomen. And if you really are a lobster connoisseur, do you suck -not pick- the meat out of the legs? Do you enjoy the tomalley?
Enough of the soapbox. Personally, I hate steamers, but love fried clams. Outside of that, there is not much from the sea that I will not eat or do not like.
I don't like strong fishy flavored fish. Halibut and Chilean seabass are my favorite fish. Love lobster, shrimp and crab in that order. Clams steamed over beer, garlic and onions. Buttah, buttah, buttah. Scallops. I like mussels but it is so hard to find them where they don't taste so darned strong. I really enjoy them baked Japanese style with that pink mayo-Sriracha sauce with roe on top or just with the mayo and roe.
What's my favorite? Good lord, its easier to say what seafood I DON'T like. That (short) list would be
flounder (it tastes so fishy... and not the good kind of fishy)
raw oysters on the halfshell (its the texture... I can see why the term "throat oyster" was coined for phlegm)
canned smoked shellfish (what a way to ruin good shellfish. of course, smoked fish is amazing)
Otherwise any seafood I'll gobble down and if I haven't had it, I'll try it no questions asked. om nom nom. Actually, now that I think of it, I REALLY want some fried bullhead. I haven't had that since I was a child.
