I have never cooked with it, but I don't avoid it. If figure your eating it almost anytime you eat out, or eat many packaged foods.
Our youngest son just graduated from college and has temporarily moved back home. He swears by it, and is always pulling out his spice box, grabbing his container of MSG and tries to get me to use it. I have refused to use it so far, because I've heard so much bad stuff about it, but I'm weakening.
My mom says she's allergic to it, but I really think its all in her head. She thinks she's allergic to everything. She did end up in the emergency room one time about 15-20 years ago after eating Chinese food at a mall food court. Of course, she worked in that mall and ate there all the time. My parents have always lived on fast and packaged foods. I think if she was really allergic she would have had more than one reaction to it during her life.
Some people could then top that great taste off with a trip to the ER.
Can't that be said for many foods. People are often sensitive or downright allergic to foods they had no idea would bother them. Of course anyone who truly has an allergy to anything would avoid it if they had a brain and most people do. Do I make a point of even checking MSG, nope! We have no problems with it . No the other hand I do not add MSG to my food.

Haha...I used to say the same thing about my mom, but the older I get, the more sensitive I am to different foods, so I'm less likely to dismiss my mom's "allergies" as the rambling of a drama queen than I was before.
We have one Chinese restaurant in the area that prides itself on never adding MSG. When eating at any of the others, I try to remember to ask them to NOT add it to my meal.

Unless you're ordering a steak, it's been added to the food long before you arrived at the restaurant.
Do you or someone you know have to avoid MSG added to foods?
Have you ever been surprised by what food MSG is in?
It doesn't bother me, and I don't know anyone who has to avoid it.
I have been surprised at the foods that do contain MSG. I love Hidden Valley Ranch Dresssing, and it has MSG. Many of Knorr's dip mixes contain it too. Maggi Seasoning, Lipton's Onion Soup mix, and one of my favorite rice mixes, Mahatma Saffron Rice, all contain MSG. I still eat all of those things, just not in huge quantities.
