ok I have a 2004 FX4 F150 V8. 81k miles. Truck has been great so far, only one major issue (rear differential shutter, fixed under warranty) Maintenance has been great, 3 tranny flushes so far, oil changes ever 4k, etc etc. Only thing that I've replaced so far on the truck has been filters, brakes, and put in a new battery last year. Had a minor issue with one of the window motors as well, not a catstrophe.

Yes I know about the spark plug issue where they can break off in the block when being changed.

Aside from that, anyone out there with one of these engines with high mileage on it? Want to know what your concerns have been so far, any major issues, etc etc? Basically, can't afford a new $40k truck right now, need 4x4 for where I live in winter, and this truck has gotten me through the severest of New England winters so far without ever getting stuck.

You got it with the spark plug issue. It is a common and potentially expensive problem but the rest of the engine has a solid reputation. 81K miles is not high mileage.

Is this a different spark plug issue than the one they were having early on with the 5.4s and the V10s spitting out plugs? I thought they had fixed it by 04.

Mike

I agree, 81k is nothing for an F150, I'm thinking down the road cause I plan to keep this truck for a long time.

Yes different issue with the spark plugs, the engine design before my truck, the 2Valve 5.4 had an issue, along with the V10 of spitting plugs.

My year, when they redesigned the 5.4 to a 3Valve, from 2004 to I think 2007 has a problem with the opposite, plugs get stuck and break off when trying to be removed for a tune up.

They make an extraction kit for the plugs that makes it a fairly easy process. I want to say Lisle makes it.

Not now it isn't, but back in the 70's you had to plan on replacing it by then.

agreed, 81k is nothing. My first new vehicle was a 1993 F150 with the 4.9 inline 6, now there was an engine, I sold it in 2004 with 170k miles, and I know it is still going with well over 200k miles now...I miss that truck but it only had 2WD.

Mine runs great, and I want to keep it that way.

I have lots of fleets pushing 200k on gas 3V 4.6's and 5.4's without issue. Overall a very solid engine given proper maintenance.

Keep it maintained and the truck should run 200K without too much trouble. I would keep a close eye on the transmission as I've had to pull and replace a number of them on trucks with 100K on the clock. It sounds to me like you are keeping up with the flushes and this is a good thing. If you do any major hauling or towing a trans temp gauge and LARGE trans cooler should be mandatory.

I have 177K on my '02 F250 5.4 4x4 and other than rusted out exhaust manifolds, it's been very reliable.

Original clutch in it too.
