Went to the Ford dealer to have them program my spare Smart key and I can't remember the price but it sounded really high for about 10 minutes of work for them.
Anyone have a less expensive solution or know how to do this yourself?
Here's what the key looks like:

It should be in your owners manual.

It's in the owners manual. Usually you require 2 other keys to program the 3rd. If you have 1 or 0 keys, you'll need a dealer or locksmith to do it.

The service dept at the Ford dealer couldn't even get my spare key coded correctly. They were going to charge me $115.
My understanding is that if I only have 1 key plus a spare, in order to program the spare, I'm going to have to have a dealer do it?

If it only takes 10 minutes, then why don't you just do it yourself?

I need a smart key for the 09 Lexus I just bought. Owner only had one key, I think his ex-wife has the other! Anyway, the Lexus forum says it is over $300 for another! Has the push button start. Oh well, I did get a great car at a great price.

It's a safety thing.
You need Both of the primary keys to program a 3rd by yourself. If you only have one, you are stuck with a dealer. However, more and more locksmiths are being able to make copies of smart transponder keys these days. That's an option as well.
It prevents theives from making a clone of your key while they have your car in possession (Valet, parking garage, mechanic, etc). Then they simply look at your registration, get your address, and swing by your house one night and grab your car and take whatever it is they want off it (rims, stereo, etc).

Check a locksmith. There are some that specialize in smart keys since more cars are coming with them every day. Might be able to do it for much cheaper
