My '93 F-150 (with only 83K) has a slightly different problem...the key comes out but the ignition switch does not lock. It will start without the key.
The good news for both of us....Hell, it's a Ford, who'd steal it?
This is a very common problem with the Escort and Focus. My 1991 Ford Escort did the same exact thing. I ended up having to remove the key with pliers which of course ruined the ignition. It is very expensive to fix properly so I just removed the ignition, glued a small key in it, and yanked out the steering wheel lock.
Yeah as far as I could tell, it's a $150 part, which isn't money you want to spend on a car that's worth... maybe around the same... primarily because the top isn't blown and the alternator is new, hehe.
If the lock still works, look into any hardware store for a can of liquid graphite. This is a fluide base lube where the fluid evaporates quickly. The stuff is graphite for real, so have a rag handy for any spills, or you will make a ROYAL black mess of things.
I know this thread is 3 yrs old but i had the same problem on one of my cars yrs back. I didnt have the $ to properly fix the problem so i disconected the negative battery terminal daily. It only took a few mins & the doors & hood locked fine. I once had a 68 cutlass supreme & my new car battery was stolen. I should of chained the latch down somehow. I now ALWAYS lock my car no matter where i am. You never know when a thief will show up.
My key got stuck in the ignition of my Ford Escort 1999. I found the remedy! Sit in the passenger seat. Look down at the gear shift. To the right of it on the console is a little round plug about 1/2 inch in diameter. Pry the plug out. Take a thin screw driver, one that will fit in the hole comfortably stick in the hole so that it angle slightly to the left toward drivers seat. Then pull the hand of the screw driver back so the tip goes toward the front of the car. There is a plunger that when pushed in will release the key. I did it several times today. Good Luck!
