I'm from out of state and want to purchase a home in the Fort Collins/Loveland area. I would like to get a retriever. I've noticed that many of the home real estate photos either don't have fences because its common area or there is a small picket type fence that would never keep a dog from getting out. I also see a lot of neighborhood information on these websites that show there are dues. Do they have outside restrictions on mutts? I can't keep a dog inside all the time so I need a backyard where they can run around when we're not out for a walk.

I'm not really sure what you're asking here? Are you looking for a house, townhome or apartment? There are LOTS of fenced places in Fort Collins. It's a very dog-centric town (that's what happens when you have the second best vet school in the country).
Can't say I have heard of any restrictions, though they are pretty strict about off leash laws around town.

Most home owner associations do not have dog restrictions, but many HOA's have fence restrictions if you are backing to open space or green belts. In many of the neighborhoods that have fence restrictions on the outer lots, you may still find an inner lot that allows a 6' privacy fence. Keep this in mind as you are choosing your home. The Colorado real estate purchase contract has a built-in contingency on your acceptance of the covenants, so be sure to review these carefully before the objection deadline.

Also, if you intend to leave your dog outside while you are at work, please train it not to bark all day or you may hear about it from the neighbors and maybe receive a visit from animal control.

Good luck,
Mike Weber
