We are considering a move to Ft Collins. My husband would already have a great paying job lined up, but we have very little money to start and we can't purchase a home for a year. Are there nice family homes that are for rent in the area. I'd like to see a map of what is somewhat close to my husbands work so we can start from there. He would be working for Veteran Affairs at the veteran clinic there. We have three children. Any advice?

How old are the kids?
What are their primary activities / interests?
Homeschool? Private? public?

Your work area is in the high rent zone due to proximity to campus. There will be a variety of places. I would be inclined to find a smaller community or older neighborhood nearby, but keeping commute reasonable.

Zillow and padmapper will show you options for rentals based on a map of the area.
I like to find rentals in the homes of edlerly so they can get some income and I can have quiet place to relax.

Several of my relatives have done this with families (usually a daylight basement apartment, or a guest house for the elderly and the family rents the main house.) these won't be advertised, you need to link up with the elderly at churches or community center.

It appears Veterans Affairs is on Drake just east of Shields? I'd guess you'd be happiest focusing south of there. This area primarily feeds Rocky Mountain High School which is right by the VA. South of Drake is probably fewer undergrads than north of Drake for the most part. You could even look down south in Loveland if a longer commute is tolerable.
