I have two children who have ADD/ADHD and a learning disability. They are suffering trying to get through our schools out on the east coast. It is very hard to keep up and they are not getting the attention they need. We are on the fence about when not IF but when to move to these areas. We would like to know if anyone knows about any private schools that are good for these situations. Also, if the public schools have good accomodations or where the heck to find this stuff out.

Thanks -

D.

Our oldest son has ADHD and our school district has done a lot to help meet his needs. It took a medical diagnosis and some testing by the school to get the appropriate accommodations in place. His biggest struggles were with reading and writing, and that is where he is getting extra help. We have seen a huge turnaround in how he is doing in school and it is improving his self esteem.

We do live down in Douglas County, south of Denver, but I would think that other school districts would have similar accommodations for special needs kids.

Your best bet is to contact the school district(s) where you are interested in living and see what accommodations they can provide and the necessary steps to get them in place. If the public schools cannot accommodate your kids, then I can see checking out private schools.

I have access to a subscription based Colorado School Guides website that allows you to search for this type of information. If you send me an email I will give you the user name and password for the site. moderator cut

Default Call a licensed psychologist in your area

Someone practicing privately who has experience in the school system would probably be helpful. Here in Fort Collins we have a practice called NeuroDevelopment http://www.neuro-development.com that helps parents find a good fit for their kids (particularly when ADHD, Autism or other learning/behavior problems are a concern). Hopefully you can find someting similar where you live.
