Durango is beautiful, but it is pretty far away from anything. It will be less crowded and is a good jumping off point for many outdoor adventures in the mountains and southwest US.

Fort Collins is less than an hour from Denver. This makes things like travel less expensive and more direct (from Denver International Airport than from Durango's airport) and provides opportunity for shopping, dining and cultural activities that are found in larger cities.

Fort Collins has also won awards as being one of the best places to retire. There is a great community of retirees here and they seem to love it!

Unless you are really into outdoor sports/activities, Fort Collins would definitely have more to offer a retiree. Durango is an amazing town, but most of it's amenities involve cycling, skiing, hiking, and what not.

The others are correct that it is pretty far from everything else, including a major city and airport.
