I'd like to move to Florida to retire. I'm 60 and want to buy in a neighborhood that's fairly quiet. I do have grandchildren who will visit so I don't want to live in a senior area or belong to an association. I'm thinking of Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale or Hollywood. I need to be close to the ocean. Any suggestions?

You want to be much more North. The retirement days of the Fort Lauderdale are LONG over. all the retirement communities are turning into all ages, and since they are the cheaper places to live, well you can figure it out for yourself what type of people are moving into the once nice communities.

You should look in the Palm Beach areas near the beach. Depending on your budget, you can get a nice 1-bedroom condo on the ocean for less than $150k. Basically just go an hour or so north of lauderdale.

Is the ocean water warm in Palm Beach? I came from Massachusetts originally and don't like cold water. I want to be where the gulf stream goes through.

What about Hollywood. I visited there a couple of years ago and loved the area.

Aha! You have good taste ! A lot of people here will bad mouth Hollywood. They think it's "sketchy".

I probably already live in a "sketchy" neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most of the homes are old but the people are friendly and nice.

Yeah... I like Hollywood. I think it depends on what your used to and what you see as the "norm". I just posted because it seems like whenever anyone brings up Hollywood some one has something bad to say. All that matters is what you like and where you are comfortable. One thing I can say is Hollywood beach is swarmed by tourist during the winter most of whom seem to be retirees from Canada.

That's funny because my heritage is French Canadian, although I was born in the U.S. Both my grandparents are from Nova Scotia. I'm planning on renting for a month before I buy so I can look at the neighborhoods at night as well as during the day. Then I'll make my decision. Thanks for your help.

Hollywood Beach sees a population increase, probably roughly 300% during winter months, almost all French Canadian. If that's where you are from, you may really like it then.
