Does anyone here own a home on an ocean-access canal, and can give a ballpark of what one would expect to pay for homeowners insurance in this day and age? Of course it all depends on the price of the home, features etc. We'd be looking at homes in the $300,000 or less range. I have been reading a lot of horror stories concerning insurance prices. Is it really much more expensive than a non-ocean access home?

It all depends on if you have hurricane protection and all the things you mentioned. It's not impossible to get or afford. Get with your agent and get some prices. That's the best thing you can do. But don't get scared off from looking at homes near the water without actually speaking to an agent or from someone who actually lives on the water and has coverage.
