I will be visiting making a short visit(5 days)to both the Miami and ft. Lauderdale area and was considering a stay at the hard rock hotel in Hollywood as it appears this hotel is situated between both areas. My wife and I will be traveling with 2 teens so I thought this hotel would appeal to my kids as they advertise a huge pool/water slide and an overall vibrant atmosphere with restaurants and shops not to mention the casinos for myself. My question is is this hotel as advertised to be for all and is there anything else in the immediate area to do. I can see its close to the beaches by car. Am I just better off getting something by the shore in say ft. Lauderdale? Just want to keep it interesting for the kids but also safe. Do I need to worry about my kids at this hotel?

Not sure when you plan on visiting, but Gulfstream Park is a thoroughbred horse racing track that is nearby. It's a very nice facility and you can get close to the horses when they are saddling/walking around prior to the race. Plus the racing itself is a nice experience. It's free or almost free to get in. there are restaurants and casinos on the grounds and there is a new mall that is attached to the facility. You can walk between the mall and the track.

You have to check to to see if racing is taking place that day/time that you plan to visit. However, the mall, restaurants and casino are open regardless. they have concerts and events there as well.

Hard Rock is a good place, although it caters more to an adult crowd than a kids crowd. The Hard Rock complex has lots of stuff going on, but there isn't anything else immediately around Hard Rock worth doing. The area immediately around Hard Rock is rather industrial. The beaches and Fort Lauderdale are a pretty easy drive- maybe 15 minutes. Sawgrass Mills shopping mall is really cool too. It is the largest outlet mall in the country. You can spend an entire day walking around that place. Your kids will love the beaches. Pools are fun, but who wants to spend much time at the pool when you have the beach!

The best places to see/do are the beaches, specifically Fort Lauderdale beach, and South Beach in Miami. If you have a rental car, I would recommend driving up the length of Miami Beach from the bottom tip of South Beach all the way north to Hollywood. It is one of the most interesting, magnificent drives in the country. There is nothing else like it.
