...is typically much more expensive compared to other destinations. Has anyone made this trip and has suggestions or even alternatives? Ideally was hoping to avoid flying to a busier airport like Miami then commuting up, but may have to choose such an option. Have a great day all!

You can fly into West Palm (PBI) too. Its about the same distance as MIA is to Fort Lauderdale. If the price difference is $50 or less though, I'd just stick with FLL. Hope this helps!!

I fly back and forth from Chicago all the time and I recommend Spirit. they fly non-stop three times a day from ORD to FLL. Spirit has gotten a lot of flack for charging for carry-ons and bags, but they still have the best darn prices around. I fly them pretty regularly for usually 100-150 cheaper then what Southwest would charge.

Give them a shot. I know you "get what you pay for", but for a three hour, non-stop flight it's well worth the inconvenience of not getting a free beverage on-board.

My little sister and her family lives in Chicago and I have other family members that live up there too on my wife's side. We fly up there pretty often compared to other cities and we've always been able to find cheap flights to and from Chicago via Southwest. We always use FLL as our airport since it's convenient for us.

If you don't mind flying out of Midway instead of O'Hare, Southwest has quite a few flights to FLL.
