I'm visiting for 3 weeks mid-December and would prefer to buy a car and keep it in Florida until we move in June, since we'll probably visit a few times between now and then. My question is - if I have NJ license and insurance and residency - can I register the car in Florida and get Florida insurance?

I think you need to be a FL resident for that

If you have an address down here you can register it in, you should be all good. I moved down here and bought a car before actually moving here. I didn't have insurance (I didn't own a vehicle prior to this) and I didn't yet have my florida license, but I was able to purchase a used car using my new florida address.

As long as you have a physical, florida address to use (a friend, relative, whatever), you should be fine. Otherwise, you will probably be out of luck.

DH started job down here in June. You may have to use a different insurance company as some of the NJ companies do not write policies down here. Our new policy covered us in both states (we had NJ manufacturers before) until we officially moved here in mid August. You do need an address. If you do not have a relative your company may have transitional housing apartment that you can use as the secondary address (NJ would remain your primary) until you sign a lease or buy a home.
Be prepared, our auto insurance cost increased significantly (we had NJ manufacturers before now Geico) & the cost to register both cars & get 2 new licenses was nearly $1000!
Also make an appointment to get a new license- I think NJ DMV is heaven after spending 6 hours with 3 kids to get one & yes I had all the documents needed.
Good luck
Denise
