My mom is planning to buy a house/condo in the Plantation/Sunrise area. She has checked out 2 places - Lakes of Jacaranda at Cleary and Nob Hill, and the other a villa on NW29Ct in Sunrise. Can anyone tell me if these neighborhoods are safe? Also, it might be another year or 2 before she can actually move in, so she may rent it out till then. Is that something that would be feasible? She isnt looking to make an income, just to keep it "warm" until she can move in. Appreciate all feedback.

I looked into buying a condo at Lakes of Jacaranda. The pipes used in the plumbing have burst in many apartments causing extensive mold damage. Even if she were to replace the pipes (at a cost of around $2K) in anticipation, she would still be possibly exposed to mold from attached apartments. Due to the combination of the real estate bust hitting at the same time as these bursting pipes, most of these apartments were abandoned and never repaired, so the mold is really at toxic levels (even if normally mold wasnt something that frightened her (it is common down here) - it's really a serious issue in this complex). There is also a very large proportion of these apartments that are being held as rental units as there are no restrictions on renting them out. Because of the low sale prices, in a terrific, safe neighborhood across from an excellent elementary school, it is attracting investors, and then due to the undesirability of the mold, there is frequent turnover....

The other complex I am not familiar with.

Thanks for the info. Any other condos you would recommend instead? Hows the neighborhood by the way?

The neighborhood is great, though I think she might meet more peers in one of the complexes in Jacaranda Country Club (near the above at Broward & Nob Hill) - attracts more of an older, golf crowd, rather than families with young children. I've never looked into buying an apartment in there though I do own a house there. Really, very nice area that is green and not architecturally redundant.
