Greetings from Las Vegas. I live in a retirement community. You think you have it bad. This community is a morgue. I have been here for 8 months and have talked to 4 people in the community. All of them only came out of their "shell" to get me to vote for some "crazy woman-child" political candidate that they had something in common with. She was terrifying, she wanted to abolish the Social Secutity Administration and put all the multi-billions of it's money into the stock market for our futiure, privatize it into the hands of the same people that brought us the present slump, she also wanted to abolish the state education system privatize it, and the U. S. Department of Energy and the Veterans Administration. She was runing for U. S. Senate and only lost by 13,000 votes. Nevada has become to scary, we have $3,000,000,000.00 in revenue and $4,000,000,000.00 in bills. I gotta go.

The only saving grace here is Starbucks, an international collection of interesting people. Note, if you think you will win at gambling you are correct, however you will win much less than you spend gambling, I do not gamble on anything which is why I am searching on line before I pick a place in Florida to look for my final home purchase, I am 61 yrs. Plus Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, is an average of 7 feet lower each year for the last ten years, thanks to California. The real estate people here tell me everything's going to be O.K. Because there are 58,000 foreclosed homes here to pick from.

One other point, the moving companies here say one of the 10 most selected places to move in the U. S. is Pompano Beach. Rat Pack and IPod or something Pod also say that. They make money where ever you move and probably would not lie.

Now to my point, finally.
I have read all the entries from beginning to end, May 2010. The views on Pompano are so polarized for and against that it becomes exhausting to find creditable patterns pro or con for Pompano. I have read through the pages, 8 total, and I and confused and exhausted. Is there a nuetral source with a view from the middle to each contrasting side?

I must live by the ocean, I am/was a Naval Engineer and need a boat more than a House. I would live on a boat if I could afford one comfortable, large, enough.

It seems like now in 2011 everything good has an equal amount of bad, Maybe it always did and I did not stop and notice that until I retired and had time to think about what I saw and not simply glance at everything and keep on moving through my list of things to do.

Write when you can,
love, Jerry.

Default Have you made progress on your search?

I was just looking through these forums, as I'm in a similar dilemma, looking for a place to retire, and came across your post. On a trip to FL a few months ago, I found a few places I liked, particularly Delray Beach, but reading posts about the area have made me more confused than ever. I'm currently negotiating with a buyer for my townhome in NJ and feeling really frazzled about not knowing where I'm going! Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.

MY QIUCK REPLY, IT'S 1:59 AM and I have to get up early to close on a house here in Las Vegas, NV today Mar30.

I settled for Las Vegas. Florida has too many mosquitos, flies, bugs, snakes, alligators, etc. Also the humidity is to exhausting. Home insurance in FL is one half of your mortgage because of hurricanes. Mortgage plus 50% of your mortgage each month.

I got a two story here right next to a soon to be opened V. A. hospital ( $250,000.00 dollar building that will be the new South Western United States Regional Medical Center). It is one half the size of the Bellagio. The two story I got is 2500 sq ft. It previously sold for $371,000.00 and I got it for $149,990.00 it was a easy quick sale. This type of a sale is a routine event here. It is one and one half miles from the new V. A. that opens this summer.

Payment is $756.00 a month with yearly taxes cut in half for disabled veterans. Total payment for all including HOA is under $1000,00

This is the only place that is socially laid back and easy going with good year round weather except for CA which is still out of my price range, but I don't care I was born there in '49 and gladly left there in '83 and also it seems like the only people who I have meet from there recently, last 10 years, love themselves much more than I ever could. I. E. " Spoken: I AM FROM CALIFORNIA...Implied yet unspoken: i am superior to you." Their tone and attitude is unnerving.

Las Vegas is better because there is a constant change of faces on the Strip and if you want friends month to month you get them in your neighborhood or local night spots.

Good night and good luck

It must be a relief to have made the decision to stay in Vegas. You got an excellent deal on the house. The fact that you have a VA hospital nearby and other ammentiies that will make your life easier are all pluses. Not to mention the cost of living - our taxes and insurance can be major deterrents for newcomers.

I have lived in Florida for many years. In it's defense, the insects, gators, etc. are an exaggeratation. I couldn't bare to live in your heat; likewise I cannot bare our humidity at times. The perfect combination is a challenge to find, but in the end it seems you have found yours.

Best of luck in your new home!! :-)
