Hi folks. I'm a bit frustrated right now and wonder if someone could offer their experience.

I recently bought a used car from a large Ft. Lauderdale dealership. I traded in my old car. The title on the old car was with the state electronically. On the “retail purchase agreement” I paid

a- $92.95 for Electronic Registration Processing,
b-$135.90 for Transfer, title & tag, and
c- $27.00 for third party tag agency.

I have a temporary tag from the dealer right now, but can reuse my old tag as soon as I get the new registration sticker since my birthday is next week.

I was amazed when I got a postcard today saying that I owe the dealership more money ($96.75)

I called the State and they told me the base fees were $56.65 for the registration renewal and $78.25 for the title on the new car. The state already shows the transaction is complete.

Do you think I already paid the dealership everything I was suppose to?

Doesn’t the dealership know in advance what the title, tag and registration fees are?

Why would I owe them any more money?

Did they order a new tag instead of reusing yours? Did you pay for their employee to do the registration for you maybe? What is this electronic processing fee?
Was the old title from out of state? When we moved we paid extremely high fees to register the cars due to the fact that the titles were from out of state. I thought this was ridiculous because we owned both cars outright so there was nothing to check in terms of ownership. But we paid several hundred dollars per car. And we only got 6 mos on my dh's because of his birthday. Good luck. Thanks for your post, this is good for me to look at as I want to get a new car soon.

Thanks for your questions. My title for the old car was filed with the state electronically. According to the state fees, it only costs $2.50 to get a paper copy of it, and agencies charge $10 for the paper copy. So neither cost is anywhere near what they are now asking for. I will be using my original plate, not a new one. Both old and new cars are Florida cars.
