Hi guys, I am a 19 year old male looking to move to south Florida. I will be attending a university in Doral, but wouldn't mind a 30-45 min commute as I like to drive. Based on some research that I have done, the Ft. Lauderdale area looks like a better place to live. I have found an apartment, but I'm not sure where the bad areas of Ft. lauderdale are. The address for the one apartment that i found is -- 13475 SW 9TH ST #409 409 PEMBROKE PINES, FL 33027 -- Is that in a safe area? Also, what areas should I avoid in Ft. Lauderdale when looking for an apartment? I am looking for a 1 bedroom apartment for no more than 850/mo. Thanks in advance!

The only to find if it is safe for you is to visit...for what is safe for me...might be a nightmare for you... however...I would consider looking for an extended stay hotel that offers a small kitchen...then you could down and visit several areas yourself before signing on the dotted line and finding yourself stuck in a rat hole...or worse...for a year...and the best part...extended stay hotels do not require a commitment...so you could go down and possibly find something in the first few days and move out...

The address you gave is in Century Village, which is a retirement community for 55+ elderly. You wouldn't even be allowed to live there. Also, don't confuse Pembroke Pines with Fort Lauderdale. They are 2 different areas and are about 30 minutes apart. Pembroke Pines is an extreme Southwest suburb in Broward County. You won't be going anywhere near Fort Lauderdale in your daily commutes to Doral.

Let me pose this question- What is your overall budget, meaning the maximum amount of rent you can reasonably afford? There might be some other areas to look besides Pembroke Pines. P.P's is a nice suburb in general, but you might get bored there being only 19 years old.

Thanks, I'll look into that. That does sound like a good idea.

I feel like a dumba** now. Haha. I'd like to spend $850 max, if possible. Honestly, I am not a typical 19 year old. I don't like to party. However, I do like going to the movies, going to nice restaurants, etc. I don't want to live in the city. I want to stick to the suburbs and have entertainment within a 15-20 min drive.

Pembroke Pines is certainly the closest option to Doral that is safe. Once you go any further south, the demographics change drastically and it is almost exclusively Spanish. But I can think of other suburbs in Broward County that are better for a single 19 year old guy, new to the area, looking to meet people. Plantation, Davie, and Sunrise are probably better options for that. But your commute will increase a bit.

Thanks for the reply. Is this address in a safe area?
5331 SW 43rd Terrace Dania Beach, FL 33314 (I didn't see anything about a retirement community haha). What areas of Davie are safe?

EDIT: Also, I have an address for Pembroke Pines. 5671 Washington St. Hollywood, FL 33023 . What areas of Pembroke Pines are safe?

Both areas are probably safe, but not areas I'd recommend. I'm not 100% sure but I think those areas are retirees and lots of trailer parks. You can do better. You would be better off sticking with Pembroke Pines. Honestly, I think you need the help of a realtor. I seems like you're stabbing in the dark here. Sunrise and Weston are nice areas with tons of good rental complexes. Also check out Plantation and Davie.

Davie- look around Nova Southeastern University. It is a college area, but tons of apartment communities with affordable rents.

Plantation- just north of Davie as there are tons of apartment complexes. Camden Plantation is really nice.
