Rangoon Creeper is the plant I couldn't recall. a fantastic vine that can cover the world if given 1/2 a chance.

Try Fiddlewood. People use Ficus because it's cheap. Fiddlewood is more expensive, about 20 bucks for one bush, but it drops seeds like crazy all summer so you can plant those and easily make a nice hedge. It's native, it has fragrent flowers, and it's much easier to maintain than ficus.
