Hi Everyone,
I grew up north and I am trying to grow some herbs in pots out on my patio but a day after I planted them a couple of the plants look so wilted and shriveled that I think they are dead......Did I water them too much when I planted them? Does anyone have any hints for me? I want to grow basil, sage, and thyme. Thanks!

Default Herbs in Florida

Probably they are getting too much sun. I have basil that went so wild on my balcony that it was growing in 4 foot branches! I now have oregano that is doing great, and citrus thyme, along with green onions, garlic chives and rosemary. The trick I find is to have them partially shaded in the worst hours of the day, and fully sunned if possible in the morning/evening. I have mine on a balcony, second floor, on the bottom rack of a 2-rack garden rack. The stuff on top gets burned this time of year, especially if you are facing east or west. North and south facing plants will get the morning and evening sun, and if they are shaded by something directly above, they stay cool in the brutal afternoon hours.

Also try to water after 6pm or in the early morning. Watering while it's hot out is a no no because the plants are in a different mode in the heat of the day and it shocks them to get water.

I would suggest bringing your new herbs home, repotting immediately into something bigger with good soil, then do as mentioned above. I learned by trial and error and now my herbs are literally growing like weeds. My oregano has stalks that are 2 feet long!!
