Just wondering, are there people from this demographic in South Florida? Or is it more rich liberal yuppie volvo driving types?
Basically, is it anything similar to Austin, SF, Portland, Seattle there at all in culture?

Would be awesome if it were moreso - but perhaps it's getting there.

I'd have to say a big time "No" to the original question. It's nothing like Portland/SF/Seattle (never spent time in Austin) here, and I'm not talking about the weather.

My shoot-from-the-hip hypothesis is that in order for a sufficient critical mass of [hippie/ultra lib/etc], you need a strong public educational system and a strong middle class base, both of which are non-existent down here. It also occurred to me that south Fla is the only major metropolitan area in the US that I can think of that doesn't have a decent public institution of higher education. Throw in the large Latin population (which tend to be broadly "left-leaning" in the more "traditional" less radical sense) and you've got nothing resembling e.g. Portland.

So you need to have a very sophisticated education system in order to be nuts?

I don't know (it was a "hypothesis"), but your choice of terms inclines me to believe more strongly in the inverse of the original correlation

The answer is NO to the original question. There are very few hippies here. Mostly the rich, yuppie Volvo driving liberals, lol. South FL isn't very liberal at all. Broward County votes 75% Democrat, but that is mainly because of the large black and Jewish populations. Miami-Dade is a red county and the Cubans vote Republican predominantly.

South FL is nothing like San Francisco or any West Coast liberal bastions. It is closer to Tennessee than San Fransisco.

If by liberal, you mean driving a fancy import car that is leased, shopping at Whole Foods, buying the latest I-phone for your 15 year old daughter on credit, eating out at expensive restaurants that have mediocre food, cutting off other drivers on I-95 so that you can get to the Sawgrass Mills mall on time, watching re-runs of the Jersey Shore because your own life sucks, and doing cocaine because Tony Montana did it, then YES. South FL is very liberal.

If by liberal you mean protesting in the streets, wearing tie-die shirts and headbands, not bathing for weeks while slathering yourself with Petrule Oil, listening to Jimmy Hendrix, saying the words "Groovie" or "Peace", owning a VW van with curtains in the windows, camping out in the woods by a bonfire playing guitar, and lighting incents, then NO.
