I'm a single woman in my early 40's, no children, registered nurse, looking for a place to live in South Florida. Most of my extended family is in Broward County, Fort Lauderdale so I don't want to be far from them. I initially was considering a single home/townhouse near the beaches but realized it might still be a lonely place. Now I am starting to look in condo apartment buildings either along the intercoastal to view the boats or ocean view. My limit is $280,000 with low HOA fees. I'm thinking maybe along Pompano Beaches or Lauderdale-by-the-Sea would be a good place for me. I was told between Atlantic Blvd and E Commercial Blvd is a very good social area. I also heard that some condos have events for singles. I need a good place to meet eligible professionals. Any suggestions on areas and specific condos?

I would avoid the two areas mentioned as they tend to attract an older demographic as well as tourists. Not exactly an eligible singles scene! I would focus on the area between Oakland Park Blvd and Commercial Blvd (even on up to Imperial Point) east of Bayview Drive.

EIGHTY PERCENT??? Where did you pull up that statistic? That would mean there's 125K in the gay community which would rival LA and exceed Chicago, both cities with populations 30 times (or more) larger than Ft Lauderdale. Ft Lauderdale only makes the list when coupled with Miami/Miami Beach in terms of cities with a high proportion of gay community to the overall population, ranking a whopping 4.7% of the overall population. One really shouldn't let their acceptance/homophobia issues dictate someone else's relocation plans.

As someone mentioned earlier, stay a little south of Pompano. About your question, I personally love Ocean view but there are people who say it sunset you don't see much so nice to see intracoastal. If you not in a rush, try to get an end unit which offers both views. With 280K budget you should be able to find something good (just stay flexible)

Lauderdale By The Seas and Fort Lauderdale Beach are the places to look. Pompano has an abundance of decent oceanview condos, but as someone mentioned earlier, it tends to be predominantly retirees. There are still some middle-aged singles there. I personally know someone who fits that criteria who lives in Pompano beach in a highrise on the beach. Also, you may want to consider Hollywood.
