We will be staying at Pelican Grand and wondered if we will need a car to get around to shopping and restuarants. If so what are the driving conditions like down 1A and into Lauderdale on Las Olas. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The problem with renting a car and staying at at hotel/resort is the parking fee's they charge...usually around $30 a day...plus tax and tip...then you add in the price of the rental and your are up to $60 or more a day...when my wife and I go to Fort Lauderdale we never rent a car...instead we take a cab almost everywhere or we walk...a 5 mile cab ride is usually less than $10 and the best part...we can both have a drink or two at dinner and not worry about who is going to drive back to the hotel...

If you plan to stay near the beach your entire trip, there is no reason to rent a car. You can take a Yellow cab ride around the immediate area and to Las Olas and you'll save lots of money. The only problem is that good shopping is pretty far away. The Sawgrass Mills mall and Aventura are 30 minutes away. You can take buses to get there, but it isn't recommended. Your hotel may have a shuttle service to shopping areas.

Unlike the previous commentator, I would recommend taking a bus. The one that go to Galleria Mall or Sawgrass Mall stops right in front of the Pelican Grand, or right near it. I believe it is Bus #36. You can get schedules online or call 954-357-8400. The fare is $1.75.

I take the bus often (as do many others), and it works as well as any suburban bus system.

The bus is doable, but takes a year and a day to get anywhere. It is very cheap though. Go for it if you chose.
