I need some advice… My husband and I are moving to the Davie area where he will be going to Med School. I have a couple of job opportunities in downtown Miami and was wondering what the commute would be like… how long it would take… how bad the traffic is, etc. Is it do-able or should I avoid it altogether? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

During rush hours, the commute is lengthened. I would say closer to an hour depending on which part of downtown Miami you are going to. Also, the traffic in the summer is much lighter than the winter months. There are less snowbirds and tourists here in the summer and many residents move away half of the year.

Brutal brutal brutal. Well at least half of the way. From Davie, I suggest taking the turnpike down to Golden Glades (this is usually pretty quick, fifteen minutes or less no matter what time of the day you go)

The brutal part is getting through miami. The golden glades is complete ass gravy and once you get past that, it can take you half an hour to drive the seven mile stretch of 95 to downtown miami.

If you can, I would suggest taking the express lanes on 95. You have to pay and it's prorated depending on how much traffic there is (i've payed up to 2.25), but it'll be faster, and less stressful. (unless there's an accident on the express lanes in which case you'll be royally screwed) Once you get into downtown miami, no one knows how to drive there so depending on where you go it could be okay, or it could be awful.

My opinion: move closer to miami, and have your husband commute to davie. You'll be doing a reverse commute, which is like 100X faster, and you won't want to tear your hair out on the drive!

The Golden Glades Interchange is horrible. One alternative route I found is if you take back roads to 441 in Opa Locka and then take 441 all the way down to downtown and then cut over on either Flagler or some other back streets. You wind up driving through some rough areas, but it usually goes quicker than 95. The trick is you have to avoid the Golden Glades Interchange though.

Yes 441 has a ton of lights, but most are synchronized so that 441 flows well. There is far less traffic on 441 than on 95.

Depending on how far west in Davie you are, you might have to use 595 and that is a mess nowadays. If you leave very early, before 7 AM, you might have a chance. Other wise expect it to take you well over an hour each way, and you will get stuck in extended traffic jams once in a while.

I would not drive that commute.

If your hours will be predictable I would consider the Express Shuttle if I was you - it takes you from various locations in Broward to downtown Miami. One of the pickup locations is Miramar City Hall, and I think there are others.
