Hello,
My Wife and two children are very interested in relocating to Fort Lauderdale area. I was offerd a job that pays $20.00hr plus incentives. I was hoping to get some information regarding safe areas to live. Also, prices on rentals like condos or apartments. We are in our mid-twenties and my kids are 2 1/2 yrs and 3 months. We are relocating from Southern California. All help will be greatly appreciated. I have to accept the job by 8/18/11.

Thank you.

Will your wife also be working? $20/hour is doable for a single guy. Not so much for raising a family of 4 on a single income.

Were you able to get by on $20/hr in California?

$20/hr is about $3500/ month. Assuming you want to spend around $1000 per month AND that you need a 3BR I would try looking in Coral Springs, Pompano, Lauderale Lakes and Margate. Some of these areas are not the most desireable cities in Broward but you should be able to find something that is ok.

If you can spend more than that I would recommend some other areas.

Google what you are looking for (e.g., "2/2 condo in [city]") or look at the MLS at Untitled Document or Boca Raton Real Estate, Delray Beach Real Estate, ALL Palm Beach County Real Estate, Marilyn Farber Jacobs. Perhaps you can find something in your price range that way. There are apartment rental companies in all areas as well and you can google "apartment rentals in [city]".
