Are you kidding me? Hollywood? Walkable? Sure, there is a downtown, but it's nothing special and doesn't offer much to do for more than 20 minutes. In fact, 1 block from that downtown is pure ghetto, prostitutes, drugs, etc. 1 block from downtown/young circle is some of the lowest income housing in the county, it's a terrible, terrible area. I lived there for years and would never go back.

From what you are asking for, South Beach is really THE option. Though I don't think South Florida is for you. Have you thought about San Francisco?

As a matter of fact, if my husband's airline had a base there I would definitely move to San Jose or Palo Alto. Number one choice. Alas, that's not a possibility...

Thanks, that really helps! But when looking at Surfside and nearby area's rent vs. other rents in the Miami area, the Surfside area rents were much lower by several hundred dollars. Wonder what I'm missing?

You get what you pay for. There is a reason why Surfside rents are lower than other parts of Miami Beach. It is less desirable.

Why? The area went through a period of urban plight but is now being revitalized. It is probably much better today than a decade ago. But when you drive though the buildings are not as attractive as other nearby areas like Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles, etc. Many buildings are decayed, but in recent times are being renovated.

I would personally recommend Miami Beach (along Collins' Ave. or Apartments on South Beach), Coconut Grove, or Key Biscayne. In days without major events all these places are very easy to go to the Airport and they have buses and metrorails connecting to major places in Miami. There are a few running/multifunction trails along the beach or around the bay.

I was going to suggest that area as well. The little downtown in Hollywood seemed nice-ish when I was there; however, the neighborhood next to it looked pretty rough.
