Can anyone tell me of some decent but inexpensive hotels to stay at in fort lauderdale or the surrounding areas? Thanks!

What is your definition of inexpensive?

The most affordable one I'm familiar with is the Hampton Inn in downtown Fort Lauderdale. It is only a few years old and is a great location in terms of proximity to beaches and entertainment. Also, the LaQuinta Inn on US1 near Commercial blvd is probably cheaper but not quite as nice. But doable if you need a less expensive stay and aren't looking for luxury.

Also, there is a cluster of newer or recently remodeled chain hotels on SR-84/Marina Mile just off I-95. Not the most attractive area of town but is very close to Las Olas, the beaches, the airport, and cruise port. You are also a quick hop to Miami on I-95 which only takes about 25-30 minutes during non-rush hour times.

You should consult the Ft L tourist web site, Fort Lauderdale Hotels - Beaches - Restaurants - Events - Florida Vacation Information. It lists many inexpensive motels along A-1-A (the road the follows the beach). I believe that when they are genuinely inexpensive it is because they are older and have worn furnishings. If a cheap price is what you care about most, some of them could work for you. A motel across from the ocean that looks nice to me is the Lafayette Motel at 2231 N Ocean Boulevard. (Please verify the address yourself.) You can read the reviews of this motel online.
