I've heard rumblings recently that they're planning to extend the Miami-Dade metrorail into Broward County. Does anyone know what the status is? Are there actual plans in the works? Or is it all just talk?

In a word, no. None of Miami-Dade Transit's long range plans (most of which may not get built even in Dade County) have service extending into Broward County. Closest it gets is the "North Line", which extends up NW 27th Ave from where the exisiting line turns west on NW 79 St and ends at Calder race Track, just south of the Dade/Broward border. Only rail prospects for Broward County right now are the proposed light-rail line parallel to I-595, and possibly a second Tri-Rail line using the Florida East Coast railroad tracks (the ones close to US 1).

Unfortunately, Metrorail to South Beach is about as unlikely as Metrorail to Broward

That is discouraging. South FL would be so much better of a place to live if they had a metro system in Broward connecting with Miami.
