Because there are so many there that they feel comfortable around their own kind.

WM is 110% gay but more and more of east ft lauderdale has become extremely gay, lesbian and transsexual. You will really sense the overwhelming gay presence anywhere in east lauderdale.

My wife was born and raised in WM and we met in WM.

We met in a local tavern on Wilton Drive which NOW if you think about it .. had a 'Gay' sounding name!?
(Rainbow Fever)

Anyone know if the place is still there?

It was next door to a laundry mat if I remember correctly?

Default Rainbow Fever

The Rainbow Fever is gone !
I am the son of the owner (Helen). She sold it & bought a bar in Pompano (Atlantic Blvd at the intercoastal)
I managed the Rainbow from 1978 to 1981 until my wife and I opened a nightclub in Plantation called the Rusty Nail. At the time, the term "Rainbow" was associated with the disco and hippie culture. My Brother-in-law (Richard Desforges) and sister (Genene) helped transform the "Tropical Club" into a nightclub in 1977. Just about that time, the label of "Disco" became a social target. Bars like Nards, etc. started running ads with the phrase "Disco Sucks". But the Rainbow was always much more than just disco & survived after we introduced a updated music model ! We lived and rocked hard !
We had fun with "Drink and Drown nights" and Wet T-Shirt night, etc. and had the best music and DJ's around !
We loved the times we had at the Rainbow ! Employees like Karate Tommy, Tall Mike, Nancy, Phyllis, Rick Miller, Peggy Ellis, Hugh Chain, and many more, made the Rainbow the place to go !! If you have pictures or memories, feel free to email me at

WOW .. Memories!

I do remember a lot of the folks that you named.

My ex passed away several years ago.

She was a stop traffic looking lady.

Her name was Desiree' and was popular at your establishment.
(especially with the guys )

I was born in Broward General - lived in Wilton Manors until I was in my mid 20's (that was 30 years ago) - went to Wilton Manors Elem - and then Fort Lauderdale High - Class of '78... I used to frequent Rainbow Fever when 'gay' meant happy... oh, how the times they have a changed!

Happily married to a woman (and I'm a guy) - living out of state. I've been back to WM a few times, but it's true what they say about going home - you can't or don't ever really go home - it's not anywhere close to what it was when I lived there....
