My wife and I are planning our vacation for April. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, decent, hotel in Ft Lauderdale, that is safe, clean, and not outragous priced. We would like it to be walkable to interesting stuff, stores, etc. Any advice is appreciated.

My recommendation is the Hampton Inn in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The neighborhood just north and west of there is bad, but you can walk south about 8-10 blocks and hit Las Olas. It is a short drive from the beach, maybe 5-10 minutes.

There is a brand new hotel on US1 and SR-84. I think it is a Crowne Plaza? It is brand new, but may be pricier. For cheaper hotels, there are a bunch of chains on SR-84 out towards 95. It is an easy drive to the beaches, airport, and downtown Fort Lauderdale. You are also right off 95, so it is a direct shot 35 minutes to Miami if you want to explore down there.

That is a great website. I use that anytime I am considering booking a hotel.

What's reasonable to you? Hollywood Beach, which is a quick drive from the Airport, has many hotels/inns/motels ranging from the $70 per night range up. The neighborhood is quite safe and walking to restaurants and the beach is easier than driving. There are deals to be had at some of the nicer hotels in the Fort Lauderdale area, but for the most part you get what you pay for. Try the Sheraton Yankee Clipper in Fort Lauderdale. It has been refreshed in the past couple of years and it's in a great location. I think I saw a Groupon or Living Social for it once for $89 per night. Keep in mind though that parking is extra and pricey.

Would second the tripadvisor.com recommendation and also Hollywood Beach, depending on what you're looking for... If you're going for just a quiet, beach vacation, I would probably go north of Ft Lauderdale to Pompano, Hillsboro, etc...
