My husband and I want to change the last name of my daughter, from a previous relationship. How can we go about doing that in Broward county. Thank you.

You will more than likely need permission from the child's father before you can do anything...I would get in touch with him and ask if he is willing to allow the change of name...if he refuses I doubt you can do anything...

More than likely you are going to have to take out newspaper adds seeking his permission/wherabouts......in the last known place he lived and even perhaps where he might be now......it is simply amazing what the courts will make you do before they allow a change......they might even force you to contact his parents in an attempt to locate him......

At this point I would suggest you contact an attorney and seek his/her advice...it will probably save you alot of time...

You also need to be sure what you really want to do. Do you just want to change her last name or does your husband want to adopt her?

Also how old is your daughter?

I'm in a similar situation. My wife, 1 years ols and I all have my last name. My step son (Her son) has his father's last name. He is only 11 but has told me he wants my last name. I also want him to have it but feel he should be old enough so that he is sure he really wants to do that. I'm going to wait a few more years. In our case his dad gave up his rights so we wouldn't have to contact him for anything.
