Hi,
I'll be in college next year, and will possibly be attending Barry University, in Miami Shores. I was wondering about the Sunrise area, and if it is a nice place to live, or...well, beat down. I saw some well-priced houses over there, and was curious. Also, how often do hurricanes hit? My mom thinks I shouldn't get a house there because of hurricanes, and insurance not covering flooding. Thanks!

Do yourself a favor, and don't buy in Sunrise. The neighborhoods are deteriorating, and the city is suffering from the white flight. The last decade has seen Sunrise in transition. It used to be full of well to do middle class families (with a high representation of public safety families). Now, Section 8 and shady renters can be found throughout the entirety of the city. I am amazed by how high the home prices are in Sunrise. Don't be fooled; look elsewhere.

Thank you so much! This was really helpful. I'll be looking elsewhere!

Sunrise is really nice looking and safe. As far as the previous poster's analysis, I cannot argue with it, but the same can be said for almost every part of Broward County.

It also depends on the specific area of Sunrise. It has nicer and safer (with newer developments) areas - generally towards the W/SW side of it - and also more problematic and w/crime issues areas - mostly located to the NE parts of it (near Lauderhill).

I'm not sure why you would choose Sunrise if you are in college. Wouldn't you want an area closer to the beach with more nightlife going on?

Lightbulb Look At The Local High School

No matter where you want to move...you can always tell the state of the community by visiting the public high school(s), while they are open, covering the area you want to move to......if you cannot imagine your children going to that school...then don't move there......
