Not in Hollywood. The garbage charge is on our water bill.

Default Some Fresh Water Wells Closed in Broward

Well, the rates could be higher in Broward than in Miami because of salt water intrusion here. Seems that since so much water has been pulled out of the South Florida Aquifer under Broward County, that salt water has started to travel inland underneath us as the South Florida Aquifer has been retreating farther inland, according to recent big article in the Sun Sentinel.

Some of the wells tapped into the aquifer in coastal areas of Broward County have been closed down as salt water is coming up in the pumps instead of fresh water so until some wells get dug into the aquifer farther inland, which will cause water bills to go up again to pay for the digging and installation of pumps and pipes to deliver the water to water purification plants, there's less fresh water to go around here and that keeps the bills higher that in Miami Dade.

It looks to me that since Miami has a lot more apartment and condominium buildings, they don't use as much water to water lawns as we do in Broward. There are a lot of private homes with lawns here but not so many apartment buildings as Miami where most of the land is covered by the building and there's not much water used on the little amount of landscaping those buildings have.

The article said that even though there are rules about watering lawns in Broward, that most people don't pay attention to them and that the police might have to go out and start writing fines for people watering their lawns on days that they aren't supposed to in order to cut down on the amount of water being pulled out of the South Florida Aquifer for watering landscapes.

I often see those automatic sprinklers on spraying out fresh water on lawns and business landscapes during rain storms or right after a rain storm that has flooded the streets so how stupid is that? Sprinklers here are not supposed to be set to run every day because of the watering restrictions in Broward but I've never seen much in the way of self sacrifice for the common good in this area so why expect some rich person or company cut down on their big lawn watering just to help other people keep their household water bills reasonable?
