I am looking to relocate to south Florida for work moving from the midwest. I will be traveling for my job but based out of Coral Springs. I am not sure where to live. I am early 30s and single. I want to be close to the water as possible. I heard Boca Raton was nice but I also heard it was a little older. West Palm is a little bit of a drive, but it has a high crime rate. I am not sure where to look. Any suggestions?

Are you looking to rent or buy? If renting, I would look in the eastern areas of Fort Lauderdale. The downtown area known as Las Olas is the coolest area with the most nightlife, but is also very expensive. You can sometimes find good deals there on privately owned condos. The cool part of living in Las Olas is you can walk to nightlife. Also check out Fort Lauderdale Beach, eastern Pompano Beach on the water, and generally any area on the water or close to the ocean.

I would avoid Boca Raton. Its a nice upper class suburb and is more family oriented. There is some nightlife in the downtown area, but it attracts an older, more snobbish crowd with money. I doubt you would like Boca Raton. If you are looking further north, downtown Delray Beach is cool and has a better nightlife scene than Boca.

You could also check out David and Plantation. Those suburbs are located about 15 minutes west of Fort Lauderdale and have an abundance of apartment complexes. I think the beach areas and downtown are much better, but the suburbs would be 2nd options.

You can commute from any of these places pretty easily to/from Coral Springs. At most, your commute would be 35-40 minutes. If living close to work is important, then Coral Springs has lots of nice apartments. I think you would be happier living closer to the beach though.

Man, I would go with Delray, its almost to Palm beach but still close enough to coral springs. Its got a funky downtown strip with fun people and some serious beach flavor. I would live there, but I would have to drive to FTL beach everyday spending 10 hours a week commuting.

Your housing budget will definitely dictate your options.

If money's no object, I 2nd the Las Olas area.

I will be renting, and I do need something with some type of outdoor space for my dog. Thanks for the suggestions.
