Hi,

I am a New Yorker who moved to South Florida (Parkland) last year. We were living in NY and considered moving to either NJ or FL. My husband was a huge advocate of FL. Now that we're been here a year...I have to say - we are very confused. The warm welcoming weather is now getting a little too HOT to handle. The school that my kids attend which was rated "A" doesn't begin to compare to our old NY school. While we are saving money on tolls and taxes...everything else is a fortune here! I am just so confused. There's very little culture and diversity and I am thinking that going to the pool/beach every weekend may not be the best way to raise kids. I am seriously considering packing up and moving to North NJ - where I KNOW the schools are top notch. Again, this is just my opinion. I'd love to hear any thoughts anyone may have. I know the North East isn't perfect and life is hard and winters are harsh...but will my kids be better off being raised there? HELP!!!! Any thoughts/opinions are welcome.

Its tough to say. I am originally from the NE, but family moved to FL when I was young and I was raised in South FL schools. The schools here were a constant point of contention growing up and my family constantly reminded me how superior NE schools were. There was little they could do because they couldn't just pack up and move back. They had jobs and a life down here. They just always felt I got an inferior education growing up. Yet later in life, I wound up going to college and being highly successful in a good career. So despite going to South FL schools, I think I turned out ok. Would I have been more successful growing up in NE schools? Perhaps, but there's really no way of knowing.

Bottom line, I think if your kids are motivated and you are good parents, your kids will turn out successful no matter what schools they go to. Its more about the parenting than the schools in my view.

go back north is my opinion. North NJ is great, look up along RT 23 and you can find some nice places, esp if you like nature like W. Milford and Vernon. Good schools. There is a reason you find people from the north east all over the United states. We move around because of success.

Are even the private schools not as good as NE schools or just public?

We left NJ for So. Florida with one in elementary, one in middle, and one in high school. The oldest went to private school, but the other two attended public in Weston. It wasn't a bad experience, although getting used to the sheer size of the schools took some time. We left after 3 years, but I can't say it was the schools that caused us to flee.

One thing that FL has over NJ is colleges. There is much more of a selection in FL. If we had stayed, we would have done private for high school for all the boys and taken advantage of in-state tuition for college.

I do think that the overall childhood experience in the northeast is better. There is less focus on materialism, and more on family IMO.

Do your kids a favor and don't stay here. Schools are so bad here even the A rated schools. The schools are not going to get any better any time soon. Life is crazy here super stressful ...people are beyond being rude. It is perfect place for Jewish and rich latinos. Cliques...
It is soo hot and humid you can do anything but pool/beach. I regret that I didn't move when I had the chance. Anywhere is better than South FL. Start planning your move. I wish you all the best.

See how bad the schools here are? They don't teach proper punctuation.

1st off we are jewish and have no idea why you feel the need to add that in...2nd We love South Florida and we are from Brooklyn lived in NJ for 10 years and was very happy to move out of NJ and we couldnt be happier. Life is taking us out of South Florida for an excellent promotion and Career opportunity for my DH, but I will say my son attended HS here and we were extremely pleased with his education.and Our daughter is in the middle school and we are very happy with her school as well...Again we live in Boca and not in Broward but there are some really good schools there too like Weston and Parkland. We have no regrets moving here and we are not rich but live just fine.

Everyone is entitled to have their opinion I just dont see where the Religion card needs to be played. Anyhow all I can recommend to those relocating is do your homework as best as you can, talk to real people and find how the good the bad and ugly and know that it does exist as there is no perfect place in life, You have to do what is best for you and your family.. I know although we might be leaving South Florida as this is our happy place, we are possibly looking to purchase something so we can still continue to love what South Florida has to offer!!

Good Luck

I fail to see what's so great about NY and NJ. . .

I wa born in Philly, but a large portion of my education happened in Florida. Even attended and graduated from FAU in Boca, a public university.

I feel as if students need to make the most of their education. Parents need to be involved. Just because NE schools may be "better" (in what way?... I dont know)... if you're an uninvolved parents with a child who doesn'r care about schooling and education--you're kid's not going to do well anywhere, whether it's in FL or NJ.

There's plenty of great private schools as well. American Heritage, Pope John Paul, St. Andrews, Pinecrest, etc.

So if you're not satisfied with your public school, you can: A: move... B: PAY for it.
u get what u pay for sometimes in life. Think about it.
