Run down homes have been receiving help from the city and being spruced up with fresh paint and upgraded landscaping. Rte 441 and US 1 have also been being refreshed with many improvements. Margaritville is to open within 2 years on Hollywood Beach, brand new mall at 441 and Hollywood blvd after demolishing the old mall and rebuilding a new mall with a super Walmart & many other quality stores. The beach has been and is continually being upgraded with beautiful lights, beautiful concrete barriers w/ entrances to one of the cleanest beaches around. Our drinking water supply is the cleanest in all of south Broward county, our electric and utilites bills the lowest compared to surrounding areas including car insurance. Young Circle Park has many activities for adults and children and is not loaded with unsavory characters. I have Amtrak, 95highway,turnpike, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami airport and 5, soon to be 6 casinos within a ten mile radius which has not brought any serious problems as all the opponents spoke of. Myself, I will be here till my end comes because there is not a more affordable, friendly and serene (unlike the bigger cities with way overpriced housing) setting in which to live. HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD
Can u talk more about the new mall coming to 441 and Hollywood BLVD?
I drove by it last week and saw it and shook my head like "look at that place, it looks awful, like a mall from 1965"..
this is the first im hearing of a new mall being built there. Can't be torn and and built soon enough!

They don't call it "Holly-Hood" for no reason. Just saying.

The "new mall", from what I understand, is going to be a 24-hour Walmart and some out parcels that include TD Bank and Taco Bell. I agree that the current eye-sore place needs to go, but a Walmart is the LAST thing I'd like to see there. It doesn't even make sense because the property borders a K-mart and there is a Family Dollar across the street. Wal-mart makes communities lose 1.4 jobs for every job it creates! I'm a fan rest of the changes coming to our area, but I'd have rather seen a park in that space.

No, but it probably lessens it significantly. I have lived all over the state and found Hollywood one of the scariest places I've ever been to...and not all areas west of I95 are safe. In fact, only a small portion are what I'd really consider "safe", IMO, and those are areas where you are paying more to live there.

That's just the reality of the South Florida housing market, unfortunately. Stories of robberies/burglaries were not uncommon from friends who lived in the area. So I wouldn't necessarily say I am pulling a random sample out of thin air. Yeah, crime happens, but I sure as hell wouldn't want someone to experience what I did.

I grew up in Hollywood in the 60's. I moved away in the 70's to NYC and moved back to Hollywood in 2003. When I returned I was a bit nostalgic about the fact NOTHING had changed. In the past 10 years Young Circle has been upgraded to a really nice park and the beach broadwalk has been renovated. These are good things I guess but they laid off almost half the Police force due to budget cuts. Prostitutes and crack dealers rent the cheap hotel rooms on US1 and the Police officers I've spoken to said it was not a priority. I spoke to an officer once when my car was burgled in my driveway and he said that city hall only cares about the tourist areas and the residents can **** off as far as they're concerned. I live in the Lakes area, east of US1 and South of Hollywood Blvd. I have seen zero improvement in the crime rate in the last 10 years.

Or Hollyweird. I work in downtown Hollywood and while the city has some great places to eat. It can be a little seedy. At least they are dog friendly.

Hollywood Beach used to be my favorite beach anywhere. We'd stay at the Seagate Villas, Greenbriar Beach Resort, or the Holiday Inn with the huge tiki bar on the beach. I loved it so much because the beach was so beautiful and those old motels were well kept and nostalgic.

Other than Nikki Beach when it was at the Diplomat and Le Tub, I haven't spent any time in Hollywood in about ten years.

Last Sunday I decided to head down and do my daily run on the Broadwalk.

I was so disappointed. Other than the literal Broadwalk, Hollywood Beach has really gone downhill. What used to be charmingly old is now run down and seedy.

Why can't someone do something about that grand old Ramada with the indoor mall?

It was heartbreaking to me.
