In case you live in an area that is in the mandatory evacuation zone can you go to any of the open shelters or only the one that is closest to where you live?

As far as I know, there's no restriction on what shelter you can go to.

I would make a backup plan instead of a shelter. We head south from the hurricane and get a hotel as we have three cats. Hotels usually drop their pet restrictions during this time.

Take plenty of food and water wherever you go. You could end up in a shelter overnight or for weeks. In a shelter you are pretty much locked in but with a hotel you can come and go.

Believe me, you do NOT under any circumstances want to have to go to a shelter during a hurricane. Even in the nicest of neighborhoods. We'll just leave it at that.

shelters are only for those with no where else to go. as a nurse that worked through fl hurricanes seasons from Andrew until 2007... you will be sharing a HUGE bedroom with hundreds of people, if you loose electric, and you will because fl hasn't been smart enough to bury their electric wires, you will be peeing and pooing in garbage bags with a couple hundreds people... enough said?
also, if a storm is to it an area, the shelter in that area does not open... they evacuate! there is no set shelter.
