I'm going on a vacation this month, I'll be flying out of Detroit on the 7th and will be back in Detroit on the 14th. I'll be staying in Fort Lauderdale on N Ocean BLVD (I'll find the exact location if that helps). Just want some advice from the locals on things to do/ see while in the Miami-FL area (willing to travel 2 hours MAX if it's worth it). How is the public transportation? and are there any good clubs or places to hang out for a 20 year old? (not 21 unfortunately). I know I'm not being too specific, I just want to keep my options open.

Thank you for your help.

Search the forums here as your question has been asked many times. Check the Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald re events etc while you are here. Public transportion is not wonderful, but you can check that at broward county transit and get a bus schedule and map. Have fun!

Sorry about that. I guess I should have used the search bar first. But thank you for your help.

You are staying in prime location on Fort Lauderdale Beach. There is plenty to do in terms of nightlife and beaches right outside the door of your hotel. There is the Fort Lauderdale Beach strip that has some decent bars. The beach is better during the daytime these days though. At night, I would recommend taking a short cab ride to the Las Olas district of downtown Fort Lauderdale. There are some nicer bars on Las Olas Blvd near downtown. If you want cheaper dive bars, check out the strip along SE 2nd Street known as the Riverfront area that runs west from Andrews Avenue.

Plan on spending an entire day or two in Miami, only 30-45 minutes away. Go early to get parking because it gets crazy on the weekends. Get you car parked and spend the day on South Beach. There is plenty to do besides laying out on the beach too. South Beach has tons of shopping, restaurants, and bars. At night, things get much more expensive. South Beach is club central, but most places are pricey. Plan on spending a lot of dough to go out there. Totally worth it for 1 night of your life. Just make sure to get a hotel down there so you don't need to drink and drive getting back to Fort Lauderdale.

Public transportation is pretty bad here. We have city buses you can use to get around Fort Lauderdale, but they are a pain. There is a trolley system that runs between Fort Lauderdale Beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale that goes up and down Las Olas. It is only 50c each way, so pretty cheap to get back and forth from your hotel to Las Olas. The downside is that it stops running after about 9PM or so. You would be better off taking a Yellow Cab at night.

We have the Tri-Rail train which is convenient for getting from downtown Fort Lauderdale to Miami-Dade County, but then you need to switch onto the Miami metro-rail system to get downtown. Then you'd have to take a cab from downtown Miami to the beach. It is a pain.
