Hi, We are looking at moving to the Ft Lauderdale area for work. We have kids in the 6-13 ages and are looking for private schools with high academic standards esp. in Math and Science. We are ok to have a commute of 30-40 minutes. We have heard of Pine Crest and American Heritage but don't know the success rate in getting admission.

My kids are at American Heritage. We have been happy with the school. Our oldest graduated in 2012 and we have a senior and a freshman now. Our kids started in 6th grade so I don't know much about the lower grades. In the upper grades the kids are very busy with activities. Activities include math team, debate, performing arts (all kinds), sports, robotics, all sorts of clubs, and probably a few that I don't know exist. If you drive by the school in the early evening you will see tons of kids coming and going from the library, the fine arts building and the athletic fields.

The vast majority of teachers are fantastic and all of them make themselves available to students after school.

A friend of mine took a tour with his kids a few months ago and there was a waiting list for upper school (7th-12th) but you might be able to get your kids in now. If kids left the school the people on the waiting list might have opted not to switch their kids mid year. It's worth taking a tour to see what you think.

I have friends with kids at Pinecrest and they are happy with that school as well. There is also University School and North Broward Prep if you are looking for non religious schools.

+1 for American Heritage. We have friends whose kids are going there, and there are very happy.

Will your job be in Fort Lauderdale proper? If so, then Pinecrest will be better for you, simply from the point of view of driving there and back.

You can also look into the University School at Nova Southeastern University as well, They are ranked as one of the Top 3 schools in the area along with Pinecrest and AH and equally if not more expensive.
