Hi all...I'm planning on relocating to Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area) over the summer from New York and renting. I'm in my late thirties, have pets, and am pursuing jobs as a teacher. I'm trying to get a position ahead of time but I haven't yet and I may not until over the summer or right before the school year. Anyway, I may need to find an apartment first, job after. I would like to get an idea of appropriate apartments for what I'm looking for, and what neighborhoods would offer them. I'm less interested in "hip" neighborhoods and would prefer more square footage for the rent, a place to park, and something modern and comfortable. I'd like to start reaching out to realtors now who can get a sense of my timeline and what I'm looking for. If anyone has any suggestions about what neighborhoods they like, or realtors they trust, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks everybody.

I had once recommended someone in a post and it was deleted from my post with a note that specific recommendations are not allow, so I guess specific recommendations are not allowed. I use Yellowkeyrealty.com for myself and friends to find what we want and then use a realtor I like once we do.

If you list a price range and amount of rooms or size you seek it might help. Also what type of pets as most condos do not allow any and some allow only small dogs or cats.

Teacher jobs in Florida, from what friends who are teachers here tell me do not have the benefits or salary as up in NY. Renting first without a job might be very hard as most places do credit checks or require very large payments up front.

I would suggest to line up a job and then try to live near there if possible.

If you search previous threads on this same theme, you'll see that it's somewhat uncommon to find a realtor to help with rentals - there's just no money in it for them (and I don't say that critically). I know you're hoping to get settled as soon as you move, but I'd suggest a short-term rental or vacation rental even - the summer is not high season here, so there is a lot of availability for those and good prices. The Broward County school system covers the entire county, same with Palm Beach - and these are really big metro areas. You could conceivably end up with a really ugly commute if you pick a place and then end up with a job across the county. You'd also have some time to scout out the areas.

Good luck!

I second Homes for Sale in Florida. Apartments for Rent in Florida - yellowkeyrealty.com , their listings are current and unlike Craigslist you don't have to worry about getting scammed.

FWIW, living inland isn't really cheaper than living on the beaches or downtown. The really good schools are in the 'burbs driving rents up.

This is probably going to get me in trouble, but I'm actually a realtor and help renters all the time. I also have a husband in the school system and would be happy to give you any advice I can for a position.

Thanks CrystalBond! I'm doing everything I can to line up a potential position in the next few months so that I can plan a move over the summer. If I don't get a job offer, I will have to stay in NY. Teachers with my amount of time make an average of 20K less than in NY BUT that would probably come out to 10K less because NY state and city takes a huge chunk of my paycheck in taxes. Plus the cost of living in FL is less than NY.
