It's quite crowded on the Ft. Lauderdale beach area between December and March, especially in public access areas near piers, more so on week-ends. If you stay in a place with a direct beach access, you can enjoy some isolation since mostly building residents occupy nearby beach area.

Lauderdale by the Sea would be my first choice - quiet, decent parking options, great little area to grab a bite (there's a little cafe right on the pier) and get an ice cream cone in walking distance, with a good family vibe. The one caveat is that there are no lifeguards. You basically head north on A1A or Bayview or I95 to Commercial Boulevard and drive east until you can't drive any more

Second choice would be Deerfield - it's a little farther north but also easy with kids, and has lifeguards.

If you want a nice beach resort:

Lago Mar Resort | Fort Lauderdale, FL

IMO it is the best beach in Fort Lauderdale

Count me in for Lago Mar. While it isn't quiet, it is less busy than the other beaches.

I have to agree with this. My wife and I stayed there last year and we loved it. The beach is super nice and not at all overly crowded, since it's a private beach for the resort.
