The Everglades is one of the last US ecosystems I've really not explored much. I'll be in Florida for a meeting and will have a few free days which I'd like to spend in the Everglades. So far I've not discovered much useful info on how to approach the park, whether from Miami or Fort Myers, or any tips on what to do and see ?

I'm bumping the thread because I hope someone will respond. It's been so long since I was there, but if they still have them, I highly recommend an airboat tour. There are also elevated walkway tours, I think self guided.

If you are going to be in Ft. Lauderdale you come in from the Miami side. You can rent a bike do the trails, you can drive around the park and get off at random stops. There are some great boardwalks where the gators are right under you. The bike trails you will often see gators and there are some observation towers also. There are two entrances in the Miami area. Either gets you in. Shark Valley is a pretty popular one with the tram tower and observation tower. Directions - Everglades National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Where is your meeting? East coast or west coast? The best way is to take Route 41 also called Tamiami Trail into the heart of the Everglades. There are a number of places to pull over and do airboat tour rides. There is also a place called Everglades City which is really interesting. Aside from airboat tours, the Everglades is very natural and not much else in the way of commercialism, so other activities such as camping, fishing, etc. you would need to explore on your own.

The Everglades is fun for a day, but unless you plan on camping, it is really nothing more than a day trip.
