Tell me, HotandHumid, is there anyplace down here that you DO like? All of your posts about south Florida neighborhoods are extremely negative. There must be SOMETHING good about this area, right? If not, why don't you move?

Wilton Manors looks fun and games on the surface to most Gay people who just visit the area but don't live in it. It's not. Check out the crime reports for the area and you'll see listings full of break-ins into homes and cars, disorderly conduct, vandalism and lots of illegal drug possession arrests, along with drunken driven and shoplifting arrests. Often times, the city the resident who broke the law is listed in the crime report and you'll find most of the criminals come into Wilton Manors from Fort Lauderdale and Broward County to engage in their law breaking.
There aren't a lot of jobs in Wilton Manors or Fort Lauderdale and the majority of Gay men I know who aren't trying to sell real estate, and there are a lot of them, work miles away at the discount shopping mall, Sawgrass Mills, which results in ALL the major streets leading to and from Wilton Manors being constantly filled with fast moving traffic and lots of crazy drivers, making South Florida the hit and run capital of the U.S.
The mainstrip in Wilton is not "filled with" gay bars and night clubs. There are a handfull of them, yes, but it's not filled with it. There are plenty of nice places to eat, shop, get ur hair cut, boutiques, pet store, novelty stores, offices, etc...
And to say it's frequented by mostly older gay men and ppl that prey on them is also laughable.
And actually, along wilton drive, speed limits are strictly enforced with speed radars, signs warning not to speed and cops patrolling the roads, so the drivers are not crazy....In fact, it's one of the safer areas to drive.

I'm not sure where hotandhumid is getting his information from. If you look at the quality of life map for Broward County , the first entry for Fort Lauderdale on here, Wilton Manors is clearly one of the safest cities in Broward County. And FloridaDude, the majority of Wilton Manors population is gay, as is the Mayor and majority of the city council.

The Wikipedia article is incorrect. One needs to realize that anyone has access to Wiki and can write incorrect information. The author didn't understand the information he was reading. If you check out the footnote from which the Wiki article gets it's facts it refers to the number of same sex couples per 1000 of population. The US census DOES not track what percentage of a given population is gay or straight. For the author to reason from the information provided that 14 percent of the population is gay is obviously incorrect. What it is does track is what percentage ( number) of a particular population is in a same sex or opposite sex relationship. So the census tracked 140 same sex couples per 1000 population. (The author incorrectly ascertained his 14% figure from this. ) That's 280 people or 28% of the population. What the article doesn't tell us is what % of the population are in an opposite sex relationship. We also don't know the sexual orientation of the 58% of the population that indicated they were in non-family households. There's no way of knowing exactly what % of these are straight or gay. What is clear is that the political power structure of the city is a gay majority, as is the cultural and social aspects of life there. Anecdotally living in the city it's clear gay people outnumber straight people.

Have you checked out Imperial Point? I have a client who has lived in that section of Fort Lauderdale for decades. It is a very nice area, older homes like Wilton Manors, but to the north, in a great location. Imperial Point is just west of US 1 between Commercial and NE 62nd Street. Many of the homes have upgraded to 2 car garages (although I think you'll find just as many with one car, or no garages as the owners converted the space into a spare room). You're across from Bayview Drive, about 15 minutes to the beach. This is a nice section of town.

We lived in Imperial Point for almost 20 years, and I wholeheartedly endorse it. Nice neighborhood, nice mix of people (everything from young professionals to older folks who built homes there in the '60s and have never left).
