Full time workers who are unemployed in Fort Lauderdale who have been fired or laid off from a job can only collect unemployment benefits for a certain amount of time and then they are no longer counted by the State of Florida as being unemployed even though many have not found work.
Also, part-time workers, no matter how long they have worked for a company working part-time hours, are not counted as unemployed if they lose their jobs. And naturally, if someone who has just graduated from college or high school who has not been working while being a student begins to look for work, they are not counted as unemployed even though they actually are because they are looking for work and don't have employment.
Many people in this area, when they look at the manipulated unemployment figures here that don't actually count all the unemployed in Fort Lauderdale, seem to be of the opinion that the nearly 10,000 homeless people in Broward County are people who came here homeless from somewhere else but it's very rarely that homeless people can put together the funding to relocate here because of the cost of transportation as even long distance bus fares are higher these days. Also, the communities like Fort Lauderdale who set aside funds to bus homeless people elsewhere generally have the same program that Fort Lauderdale does in which the city only supplies a bus ticket to a homeless person who officials in the City have confirmed has relatives or friends at the destination the homeless person wants to take a bus to where the homeless person will be provided with a place to live so the homeless here are not just people another city gave a bus ticket to in order to get them to leave to come here.
In actuality, the majority of the people who are homeless on the streets of Fort Lauderdale were once working at jobs in Fort Lauderdale and were renting a room, an apartment or owned a home here and fell upon hard times when they lost their job and were not able to find another one here. The numbers of homeless people here swelled during the last Recession and many have looked for work but companies won't hire people who have been unemployed for a period of time past their criteria of who they will employ and even President Obama has made a plea to American companies to set this criteria aside so that Americans who used to work at gainful employment can be considered to do so again, even if they have been unemployed for a period that the companies have set down as unacceptable.
I think the only way that Fort Lauderdale citizens will ever have accurate unemployment figures reported to them is if the State of Florida government, which is the actual entity that pays out unemployment benefits even though those funds come generally from the federal government, sets up a program where anyone who is unemployed and looking for work registers with that program and the State of Florida keeps track of who finds work and who has not since as it is now, only those receiving benefits for a certain amount of time are counted as unemployed here.
