As I posted to someone else earlier - I lived there many years ago.
I recall nice apartment complexes on Cleary Blvd, just a block west of Univ and south of Sunrise Blvd.

There is an Indian grocery on Oakland Park/Andrews next to Bombay Café. Not sure if it is Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, or Oakland Park (doesn't matter).

Imperial Point in Fort Lauderdale is pretty close to 33309 and is a good area. No idea about schools.

The area has a ton of ethnic restaurants, not just indian - my office is nearby and I love to check out all the different places.

I would recommend Pembroke Pines. It's a very safe suburb and is away from the riff raff and has good public schools. Pines is probably the only place in the Ft. Lauderdale metro that I would even consider renting an apartment. Even in other areas like the downtown area near Las Olas has apartments that I would be afraid to rent from. Weston is nice but I think Pines feels more new and accessible. Pines BLVD and 83rd avenue area is nice. I'm not Indian but I have friends who are and I went with them to an Indian grocery on Pines Blvd not far from that location. It was really new and nice and not run down and old like some of the other stores in Ft. Lauderdale metro.
