I'm sure there are many other jobs people can do on their own without working for a company or the government.
Why can they not find people to work in nursing homes/care for old people? Wages. And what economic forces/trends drive wages down.

That is also a sweeping generalization to say people expect the government to employ them. The infrastructure in Florida is quite diffrent than other areas of the U.S.

This reminded me of a time I saw a cop writing tickets while me and my ex were about to have lunch at a Quizno's in OH. In front of the buildings they have a bunch of diagonal lines, which are obviously not big enough for a car, and FIRE LINE painted in front. Then, there are normal spots a few few back. People ALWAYS park diagonally over two spots (although some don't even bother to fake thinking it's a spot). My ex walked up to her and said she's his hero for writing those tickets. She said if she has to park in a normal spot they should have to too. It's a pity people don't have common sense and courtesy about these things, so I don't feel bad for them at all when they get ticketed.

25.00 is cheap next 42.00 in Montreal and if you do not pay in time it goes up to 92.00.

Lauderdale by the sea used to be sweet..until the greed set in begining with porky parker a super unscrupulous piece of dung. Lined his pockets, not caring for anything or anyone in his town. Now the town is nothing. They ticket you if your wore the wrong color that day. I got ticketed for parking my little scooter outside of a handicap spot. 300 ticket. Thing is, I was way outside of the lines of that particular spot.. In fact, when I came off the beach, there was a CAR in that handicapped spot that I was supposedly in. The most crooked, unfriendly town in s. Fla. is Lauderdale by the sea. Go somewhere else.

I find it difficult to sympathize with you. You were wrong and you were lucky: I believe other towns, and not just in South Florida, would have given you a higher ticket for that.

I find it difficult not to be annoyed with you: do you always generalize your opinion of entire towns (or people or ethnicities or countries) based on one of your minor, very personal experiences?

As for your tourist money, you can always choose to spend it in some other place, some place where they will treat you according to your standards (all of them, that is...)

Default Do you drive (and park) with your eyes closed?

How is your mistake someone elses fault?

Because of wages. The jobs you just mentioned you cannot make a living off of anymore. Also, it is impossible for a small business these days to be able to compete with the large box outlets. A small, privately-owned shop has to charge higher prices than chains and has very limited profitability. The chains simply undercut the local small guys. This is a recipe for disaster in today's society where everyone wants the cheapest. Small businesses also have higher costs for insurance and health benefits for employees. There is no incentive for someone to even start a small business under this circumstance.

Auto mechanics is a profession that has been destroyed. You simply cannot earn a decent living being an auto mechanic these days. Retail is no different. A small retail store can barely profit and barely survive these days with big box outlets like Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, Publix, and other chains. And who in the world would want to make a living earning $8/hour working retail? It is a dead-end.

I am convinced that in about 15-20 years, there will only be 10 stores in America. They'll buy up all the smaller ones and put everyone else out of business.

Stay out in the western suburbs? BOOooring. There are good reasons why people are drawn to the eastern/coastal areas, otherwise there would be no parking "problem" there!
