Hi, I will be moving soon to Plantation Isles and would to know the time it will take to get to the ocean from there. I've heard realtor say the same number for Plantation Isles and Fort Lauderdale Isles which is impossible.

I know it depends on the boat, I looking to buy a two engine's boat.

Thanks in advance.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the boat since you will be in a no wake zone putt-putting along for essentially the entire ride. It's a very long time, although I don't know the specifics. You'll also want to check bridge clearance heights if you want any kind of t-top.

Google maps shows 7 miles to get to the intracoastal then it is probably another 3 to the ocean.

I'd guess you are a solid hour each way

Isn't it all no wake zone? No matter how many engines you have, you will be crawling.

My parents live in Plantation Isles...as mentioned, it is a no wake zone pretty much the entire trip - I myself being a realtor hear other realtors giving shorter estimates - it takes us about 40-45 minutes to reach the ocean..however it is a beautiful cruise, and with a cold glass and nice tunes - you will be there in no time

Lauderdale Isles - I would say cut about 10 minutes from the trip, but still looking at around 30-35 minutes

Welcome to Sunny Sofla!

I used to live in Lauderdale Islaes for almost a decade (still own the house). A lot depends on a couple of things - do you need to wait for bridge/traffic and are you able to fight current/tides. In the worst counter current and waiting for all bridges (CSX Rail bridge at I-95, Davie Blvd, 7th Ave, FEC Rail bridge, Andrews, 3rd Avenue...) you're in for over an hour. If you get favorable current and bridge traffic, I was 45 minutes. As a sailboat, I always had bridge traffic, but not the 17th Street Bridge since if you fit under I-95 (fixed 55 feet), you can clear 17th with no bridge opening.

Assuming you're in Plantation Isles, you're behind the fixed bridges of 441 and even the turnpike...so I would say 50 minutes for you. I dont remember, however if the 441 and Turnpike bridges are higher than the bridges in downtown. Also, those rail bridges, no one clears if they're down except a kayak.

Looking for some more info on this topic. I read in this thread that it can take 45 min to get to ocean from here. I saw another forum where multiple posters said it takes 2 hours to get to ocean from plantation isles. Anyone else have any experience boating from here? If it is 8 to 9 miles to ocean, and you can keep your no wake speed to 5 mph, I dont see how it could be 45 min. What am I missing?

You are right. There is NO WAY it's 45 minutes. We have a boat downtown at Riverfront Marina. It's nearly exactly 30 minutes to make it out of the cut in to the ocean. Plantation Isles is multitudes further inland and the route takes you past my marina. I'd say probably about 2 hours seems accurate based on how much further it is.

I would NEVER buy property with ocean access in Plantation. It's not worth the extra cost. It's far faster to trailer a boat and launch at John Lloyd than to put-put for 2 hours from Plantation. Get a house where you can keep a boat on your property and just launch it. Easier to maintain the boat, faster to get out on the water, etc. etc. Trailer is the way to go in this case.

Could you imagine spending FOUR HOURS just getting to the ocean and back? I'd get to the ocean and feel it's time to turn around... Stupid.
