Wife and I are northeasterners from Hoboken NJ. We are going to relocate to Florida late this year. Originally we loved Broward county, I thought we were a perfect fit for downtown FtL then move out to weston when the little ones come along.
Then we had a change in course as the Tampa area looked cheaper yet still a big enough city for us to live in. I was at first hesitant because I knew there was an element of ignorance and the Bible belt there. I did some research and saw that some parts of the city were somewhat cosmopolitan enough for us. Not to mention her sister is relocating there.
Then today on the Tampa forum the following story is posted:

Message is as clear as the flag is large - St. Petersburg Times

I said that s it - Change of course back to where we belong - SOUTH FLORIDA!

Welcome back. Tampa is terrible AJ. I lived there for many years and the mentality there still hasn't changed much. They're a bunch of righteous bible thumping hipocrites. It is slightly cheaper to live there, but it isn't worth it. I love South Florida compared to the Central Florida area. I actually like seeing so many different race of people down here. You kinda have to accept it to be around it or move out like so many disgruntled people I've seen so far. Their first line is always, South Florida isn't what it use to be anymore and it's gone to hell. Meaning, us white people are no longer the majority and I'm mad so I'm going to join all my other white people in NC, GA, or TN. I say adios people!

I grew up in Manhattan, and moved to South Florida (specifically Miami Beach) in my 20's - it was almost a seamless transition. We tried moving to Tampa in the mid-90's (when we were in our mid-30's with young kids) and lasted all of 6 months despite easily finding great employment. We then moved to Weston and breathed a sigh of relief. I can't really articulate why Tampa was a bad fit, but it certainly didn't feel like the "6th borough" that S Florida does.
